Frequently Asked Questionsquestion

When and where does the club meet?
The club meets twice a week at the Cheam Centre Parking Lot. On Wednesdays we meet at 6:30pm and on Sundays we meet at 9:00am.

How far do you run?
On Wednesdays we run a 6 or 8 or 10 km loop. Group members are in contact with each other so no-one gets lost or left behind. We do have maps we can give out. On Sundays – we run on the Rotary Trail. This is an out-and-back packed gravel trail. We run distances from 5 km to marathon training distances.

How fast is the group?
The group will naturally break-up into pace groups. These groups range from walkers, to walk-runners, to a 4-5 minute/Km pace. You can run as fast as you feel comfortable. Depending on your personal goals – you should be able to talk comfortably.

Does everyone have to run in races?
No. Many members do not race. However, VRC does actively host races and many members do race. Some members will travel to participate in races as well.

How do I become a member?
Go to our webpage and print out the form. Fill it in and bring it with $20 to a member of the Executive committee (the website has a list of the executive members) at any VRC run.

Do you run all year? In any weather?
Yes and yes. Sometimes it is dark and damp (predominantly in the winter months), but we still run and still have fun.

What should I wear?
Wear comfortable athletic clothes- probably not cotton (like sweatpants) as it gets heavy when wet. Remember the weather and dress for it – layer-up if its cold, a wind/rain break outer layer if appropriate, ensure reflective/small lights when it’s dark. Consider wearing thin gloves and a hat in the cold and wet weather. Also, remember a good pair of running socks to avoid blisters (again not cotton).

What about shoes?
Shoes are the single most important item for running. Make sure you get someone to help you find the right shoe for you - going out and just buying any pair of shoes can have consequences. They should be of good quality and right for your feet/build. If you are new to running, the gang at Peninsula Runners in Langley and Abbotsford will help you. Be prepared to take a little time – you want the right fit for you.

Is there anywhere to store my stuff when I come out to run?
There are no lockers or storage facilities so come dressed ready to run. Most club members will arrive to the meeting points in cars, so extra things can be placed in the cars.

I’m visiting from out of town – can I come out?
Yes – you sure can. The web site will have the current meeting locations. We often go for coffee/snackies after. Feel free to join us for that as well.

Are there social events?
Yes. We have coffee after each club run. The location will be announced before we all set off. We have a Variety Run almost every month where a club member will lead a run from a new location and then we have a get together afterwards. We have had other events like hiking and camping as well.
